WORKPLACE CONSULTING
NOVO NORDISK
NORTH AMERICAN HEADQUARTERS

As a world leader in diabetes care Denmark based pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk has experienced extraordinary growth in the North American market. By 2011 the organization occupied close to 400,000 sf in four buildings in the Princeton area. Working with Novo and their real estate consultant, Granum developed a facilities and real estate strategy to consolidate Novo's office space. The plan projected a need of nearly 800,000 sf by 2020. After a competitive process to qualify properties and development teams, Novo Nordisk selected 800 Scudders Mill Road in Princeton as the location for their new headquarters. Granum provided workplace programming and project management, as well as strategic planning.

At one quarter mile long, the building comprises a series of office pods arranged diagonally across a central Main Street. At each node where the pods intersect the central circulation spine there is a secondary entrance. Each one opens onto an atrium with a three-story monumental stair as its focal point. Nicknamed "tree houses" they provide organizing elements along all three levels of Main Street. At each level there are clustered communal, collaborative, and conference spaces supporting Novo Nordisk's business enterprise. The office pods are developed as neighborhoods to create a sense of place for Novo employees. In addition to traditional space types – enclosed offices, open offices, and conference rooms – the workplace strategy incorporates a variety of work settings to support Novo's mission. There are special project rooms, work rooms, huddle spaces, and open collaborative spaces all incorporating the latest technology.
